What are cookies?
Cookies and other similar technologies, such as pixels, web bugs, etc., are text or image files that are installed in the user's browser when accessing an online service.
Among other things, cookies allow information about the user, their browser, devices, and activity on the service they access to be stored and retrieved.
1. What types of cookies exist?
There are many different types of cookies. Below, we provide users with some classifications of cookies, although this does not necessarily mean that this service uses all of these types of cookies.
a. According to the entity managing the cookies
- First-party cookies: These are cookies sent to the user's device or terminal from equipment or a domain belonging to the service provider and managed by that provider.
- Third-party cookies: These are cookies sent to the user's device or terminal from equipment or a domain that is not managed by the service provider, but by a third party that processes the information obtained through the cookies.
b. According to their retention period
- Session cookies: These cookies collect and store data while the user accesses a service and expire once the user leaves it.
- Persistent cookies: These cookies remain stored for a period determined by the service provider. Their retention period can vary from a few minutes to several years. They are used to save and retrieve certain settings whenever the user visits a service.
c. According to their purpose
- Technical cookies: These are essential and strictly necessary for the proper functioning of the service, including the use of different options or features. Examples include cookies used for session maintenance, response time management, performance monitoring, option validation, and security features.
- Preference cookies: These allow users to specify or customize certain characteristics of a service, such as language, regional settings, or browser type.
- Analytics cookies: These allow the counting of unique visitors and the analysis of service usage to measure interest in the service or in specific areas of it. For example, analytics cookies can identify geographical regions from which users connect or determine the most popular products or services.
- Advertising cookies: These cookies enable the management of advertising spaces within a service.
- Behavioural advertising cookies: These cookies enable the management of advertising spaces within a service. Their function is to store information about users' behaviour in order to display personalised advertising.
d. Other technologies
- Pixels, web bugs, or trackers: Also known as tracking pixels, pixel tags, conversion pixels, web beacons, or tracking beacons. These are tiny transparent 1x1 pixel images embedded in a service to measure user activity.
- HTML5 Storage: Consists of using HTML5 technology capabilities to store certain parameters in the user's browser that may be used to identify it.
- Local Shared Objects (LSO): Also known as "Flash Cookies", these store information on the user's device without using cookies by leveraging Adobe Flash Player technology.
- ETags: This is an HTTP protocol mechanism that allows validation of the cache stored by the user's browser. This technology is primarily used to save bandwidth by avoiding duplicate downloads, although it can also be used to recognise the user's browser.
- Canvas Fingerprinting: Consists of generating a unique browser signature by leveraging HTML5 technology to identify the user's device.
- Font Detection: A technique that identifies the font configuration installed on the user's device to obtain a unique identifier.
- Browser Cache: This technique consists of storing information in the browser cache.
- WebGL: This technique leverages the 3D rendering capabilities of modern browsers to obtain a unique device identifier based on specific hardware and configuration characteristics.
